... the concept of allowing naturalized citizens to run for President. In my opinion, any foreign born person who has been a U.S. citizen for 25 years, a resident for 10 consecutive years, and who has given up citizenship in any other country should be allowed to run assuming they meet the other qualifications.
However, I just saw something that makes me doubt my first impulse:
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright (news - web sites) said Friday that foreign-born citizens should be allowed to run for president, a reform that would require amending the Constitution.
"We are a country of immigrants. I think that it would be not a bad thing to try to figure out how to allow foreign-born people to become president," Albright told the Little Rock Rotary Club while in town to attend the opening of Bill Clinton (news - web sites)'s presidential library. I trust Albright's judgment so little that the very fact that she supports the notion makes me wonder if I've missed something. On the other hand, maybe she's just making sense for once. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.
