I don't really have a category to cover this. Two years ago Pat Tillman turned down more than $3 million from the Arizona Cardinals so that he could join the army with his brother. That was an incredible sacrifice. Today, he gave up a lot more.
Pat Tillman was apparently killed in Afghanistan yesterday. He was a true hero and patriot.
Update: Michael Goldfarb has some timely remarks.
Another Update: I've been cruising around the blogosphere and I've seen a lot more tributes to Tillman. I'm not going to try linking them all because at the moment they're really not at all hard to find. The reason I bring it up is because I'm amazed at how much this has affected me. I've broken down and cried like a baby 3 or 4 times in the last hour while reading about him. The level of self-sacrifice required for anyone to give up a large part of their lives, especially if they have lucrative opportunities, for the opportunity to risk their lives for their country is something that never fails to move me.
Since 9/11 several hundred of our soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines have lost their lives in combat. Each and every one of them died for you and me. And what's more, they chose this life. We must never forget that.
