I think David Adnesnik has the issue of Kerry's medal throwing exactly right:
As for Kerry's inconsistent comments about the medals during his various Senate races, those aren't really worth bothering with. What really gets me is that on Good Morning America, Kerry tried to pin all the blame for this controversy on the GOP attack machine rather than recognize that his own questionable behavior was responsible for it.
Kerry seems to think that as long as he can point out that his critics are politically motivated that that fact alone will disprove their charges. Until he's capable of understanding that, the motiviations of his critics aside, his own actions and subsequent statements are what opened up this nightmare he will be incapable of dealing with it.
One of the things that amazes me about Kerry is that he seems to prefer equivocation over explanation. Either he was right to throw whatever awards he actually threw, or he wasn't. If he thinks he was right, he should explain to the American people why he was right. If he was wrong, he should say he was wrong, explain how he was wrong, and tell us how and why his position has changed.
Instead, he seems intent on nuancing us to death.
