I was traveling (otherwise known as visiting family, exchanging gifts, and experiencing extended power outages) when Saddam Hussein was executed, so I didn't comment at the time.
However, I'm still not sure I have much to say. Much of the glee I've seen in the blogosphere seems unseemly, at the very least. Let it suffice to say that he was a murder like few the world has ever seen and no manner of death sentence could possibly equal the pain he inflicted. His guilt was never in question, so the only reason for a trial at all was to help the Iraqi people establish the rule of law. I hope they will be successful.
I just found your blog, and like you was hesitant to mention too much about Saddam's death(titled Saddam's Death). Like you I did mention it in my blog. But his trial was extremely important. Even in cases where it is a slam dunk on guilt, one must have a trial... due process etc. After 30
plus years of Saddam's dictatorship the Iraqi people need to see how an individuals rights are protected. In a way it is a way to control mob violence. To lead a country like Iraq towards democracy, nothing should be skipped, every letter of the law needs to be monitored and protected. And yes a trial by a jury is now available for the Iraqi people.
Well I like your blog, continue writing!
