A developer wants to build a 110 story condo building in Miami. A few points:
- This building would have close to the same number of floors as the Twin Towers at the World trade center.
- During a catastrophe a large number of people were unable to evacuate those buildings prior to it's collapse.
- I'm guessing that, by far, the major occupants of condos in Miami are retired.
- Retired people tend to be older and, therefore, slower.
All this makes this thing seem like a death trap waiting to happen. While it's true that construction techniques have improved since the Twin Towers went up, the sheer height of the thing would still be extremely dangerous.
There is a building in downtown Seattle that is 76 stories tall. We had a very serious windstorm on the day of Bill Clinton's first inauguration. Trees were blown down, small people were blown down in crosswalks, power was knocked out to half the region, and one friend had the misfortune to have lunch in the club on top of that very tall building. Light fixtures were swaying, any collection of water - in a glass or the toilet bowl - was sloshing about, it was a very scary experience, particularly for anyone given to motion sickness.
Now can you imagine a 110 story building in Miami in a hurricane? I'm getting a wee bit seasick.
